We get it: Sometimes it's hard to let go. But we promise if you follow our lead and remove these items from your bedroom (or toss some of 'em in the trash for good!), it'll lead to a cleaner and more relaxing space. Hello, more restful sleep.

Your desk area.

"Putting a work space in the bedroom is just a bad idea," says Jonathan Scott, home design expert and brand ambassador for Stearns & Foster. "The bedroom is not for working in — its purpose is to help you relax, recharge and unwind." And thinking about bills definitely doesn't help with that.

Pillows that don't bounce back.

The ultimate test to find out if you should replace your pillow? Fold it in half and if it doesn't spring back into shape, it's probably past its prime. If that's the case, toss yours and buy a new one — trust us, it'll help you sleep better.

Your random garbage.

It turns out your mom was onto something when she used to make you clean your messy bedroom all the time — an untidy space can lead to anxiety and poor sleep. So commit to a clutter check: Gather all loose papers, piles of things, and items without a home and filter into what needs to be donated, tossed, and stored.

Books you've already read.

Sure, sometimes hardcovers serve as excellent conversation starters, but your bedroom isn't a place where guests usually hang out. So you might as well hand off the nighttime reads you've already finished to a friend so they can enjoy them, too.

Clothes you never wear.

Admit it: You don't really need 10 white dresses. Instead of letting them fill your closet to the brink, pull out the ones you rarely wear and donate them.

Your old makeup.

Scientists from the London Metropolitan University tested products that were past their prime and found traces of harmful bacteria in four out of five — which is just another reason to make sure you toss yours once they expire.

Your outdated gadgets.

... like your cell phone from 10 years ago, your outdated laptop, an alarm clock that doesn't work — you name it. If you're not currently using it, all it's doing is adding clutter to your bedroom (which you know is not good for your stress).

Your overflowing laundry basket.

There's nothing like seeing this container packed to the brim to remind you of everything that's on your plate and add even more stress to your life. That's why you might want to keep this basket in your laundry room (or walk-in closet, if you're so blessed) instead.

Your snuggly pets.

In this case, just gently close the door in front of your four-legged friend. Why? Well, one study found that 30 percent of participants who slept with a pet woke up because of them, 63 percent had poor sleep quality and 5 percent said they had trouble falling back asleep.

Stacks of unread magazines.

We know, we know: You're holding them for when you have a free weekend to catch up. But chances are that probably won't happen before a new shipment of the latest issue hits your mailbox.

Your cell phone.

Let us count the reasons these should be banned from the bedroom: First off, it's dirtier than a toilet seat. But reading on this device also makes it harder to fall asleep at night, leads to less-rested sleep and it exposes you to radiation. Yikes.

Things you want to donate.

Remember those clothes you never wear? And how you pulled them all aside and put them in a box with other things you've been meaning to donate? Don't let that box sit in your room. It's taking up much needed space, and would be much better off at your local donation center.

Things you're storing under the bed.

Chances are there is a whole box full of shoes (or something else) that you forgot you even had. You most likely never use these items — hence why they're under the bed — but you weren't ready to let go of them before. Now is the time.

Candles you never burn.

There are the candles you buy yourself and burn obsessively, and then there are the candles you received as a gift that sit on your vanity for the rest of eternity. Maybe you didn't want to throw away a perfectly good candle before, or maybe the jar is really pretty and you thought it would look good just sitting there. Either way, that candle you have yet to light is taking up space and collecting dust. Toss it ASAP.

Piles of receipts.

We all have them. You throw a crumpled up receipt on top of your dresser, or in the drawer of your nightstand and then before you know it, it's a mountain. Unless you plan on using all of these on your taxes, they're just trash.
